University of Miami, North Dakota State College of Science win federal PSA contest

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration recently awarded the University of Miami and the North Dakota State College of Science as their public service announcement contest winners.

The agencies co-sponsored the fifth annual Red Ribbon Week Campus Video PSA Contest as part of Red Ribbon Week.

Entrants created 30- to 60-second videos on the dangers of alcohol and drug misuse among college students. Videos were evaluated and scored on creativity and originality, production value, and message appropriateness.

Winners were unveiled last week at the virtual National Association of Student Personnel Administrators’ 2021 Strategies Conference. The conference’s purpose is to provide the knowledge and skills needed to prevent alcohol and drug misuse among college students.

The winners received $3,000 to support their drug misuse prevention efforts, complimentary registration to attend the Strategies Conference and a plaque.

Red Ribbon Week is held annually nationwide from Oct. 23–31. Participants show their commitment to a healthy, drug-free lifestyle by wearing or displaying a red ribbon. It also is an event for demonstrating intolerance for drugs.

The event was created in 1985 to honor DEA Special Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, who was killed by drug traffickers in Mexico.
